ANA’S NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH PROGRAM

Special pilot project begun between ANA and Neighbourhood Watch for the City of Kitchener.

Neighbourhood Watch is an international program that is run locally by citizens in conjunction with the local police to provide information exchange between the neighbours and police to help keep our neighbourhoods safe and secure.

How it works - a more personal communications link is established between the individual neighbours and the police.  Neighbours are given an idea of the types of things that they can watch for that would indicate that criminal activity is occurring in the neighbourhood. They are also given a phone number to call to provide information to the police.

Information from the police comes in the form of a periodic phone message with updates of things that are happening and to watch for in the neighbourhood. An example of this is that if thieves are targeting open garage doors in our neighbourhood, information about this will be broadcast  along with a suggestion about what to watch for and what can be done to prevent you from becoming a victim.

The system is simple, and effective.  The police help us to understand what to look out for,  we take precautions, call them when we see this activity and they come and take care of the problem.

While Neighbourhood Watch is already operating in our Neighbourhood not everyone is involved, so not everyone is watching and therefore the program is not as affective as it could be in the ANA.

A proposal has been put forth and accepted from the ANA to the Neighbourhood Watch of the City of Kitchener.

That proposal is also very simple - we will try to get more people in the ANA involved in this very simple and worth while program of neighbours helping neighbours, and in turn the ANA will be given the opportunity to provide occasional messages about ANA events and activities that will be broadcast by phone to the residents of the ANA participating in the Neighbourhood Watch program.  Neighbourhood Watch has computerized equipment that can deliver 250 phone messages per hour.

The Neighbourhood Watch Board of Directors approved this proposal on January 15th, 2003 it is now our opportunity to make something of it.

We need people who will sign up to receive the phone messages from the Neighbourhood Watch and encourage their neighbours to also participate.

For more information or to participate in the program email neighbourhoodwatch@myneighbour.org or call Dave Bradshaw at 578-4586.

Thank you.
